VS began in 1898 under the name Vereinigte Schulbankfabriken, the amalgamation of a number of schools furniture manufacturers. The leader of the pack was a Berlin-based company, P. Johannes Müller & Co, Werkstätten für Schuleinrichtung, who brought with them the patent for the pioneering Rettig school bench.
